A Berry Valentine

I don’t often get the chance to celebrate Valentine’s Day. P is an avid basketball fan and it just so happens that each year, the NBA All-Stars coincides with Valentine’s Day weekend. In order to ensure that both of us are happy at this time of the year (I’ll admit that I buy into the whole Valentine’s Day festivities), we often celebrate on either the weekend before or after so that P can have the actual weekend to himself to enjoy the All-Stars with his friends.

My recent move to Toronto coupled with LDR has made it a little difficult for either of us to spend much time together. Luckily for me, P visited the weekend right before and we were able to celebrate Valentine’s Day a little bit earlier.

There’s nothing more that both of us value more than quality time together. And the distance has proven that happiness can’t be bought, so we cherish every minute that we have together in between those gaps of time that we’re apart. Rather than go out to a fancy restaurant or surprising me with big presents, P often chooses to instead cook us a dinner and have us cozy up at home to watch a movie together. A fan favorite of ours is steak and risotto, paired together with a glass of wine, while sitting back to re-watch Love Actually for the umpteenth time. But everyone knows that dinner isn’t complete without dessert.

If you were to look in my fridge, you’d notice that it’s always stocked with a berry of some kind regardless of the time of the year. Although strawberries are an absolute favorite, they’re only best when in season, so I often settle with blackberries as they always taste fantastic the whole year round. Obviously chocolate dipped strawberries are a long time favorite of mine, and as much as I love Godiva, I enjoy my strawberries too much to settle for too few at that price.

I’ve also recently been getting into white wines and roses (cue the wine for dinner). So when I stumbled across Shotberry, I was immediately intrigued by their custom designed chocolate dipped strawberries that are topped with a shot of anything that you like. I didn’t put in any specific request besides no tequila and red wine (nobody wants to wake up hungover after a post Valentine’s Day celebration), and was thoroughly impressed with the outcome. White chocolate and cookies and creme? My day is made. P doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth, but when he saw the size of the strawberries, he was instantly game.

Valentine’s Day celebrations over, I’m excited to spend time with one of my best friends in Ottawa this weekend while P spends some time with the boys watching the All-Star game.
