If there’s one thing to be said about New York, it’s the freedom of expression when it comes to fashion. I couldn’t have happened upon a more fashionable city that’s so full of creativity that I feel myself getting inspired just by breathing in the air.

As cheesy as it sounds, everytime I’m in New York, I feel less regard for the opinions of others and worry less about how my appearance is perceived.

With my inhibitions down, I’m able to completely explore the outfit ideas that come to mind. Some of my favourite outfits to date have come to fruition while I’m visiting New York. I honestly couldn’t imagine myself in a more creatively stimulating environment and vow to continue returning back each year.

If not for the phenomenal cafes scattered throughout the city and for the lack of judgement when it comes to fashion, then it’s got to be shopping for first class stock in their consignment stores.

As typical as it may sound, one of the retailers that had a top spot on my priority list of places to drop into was UNIQLO. Toronto is supposed to have its own location within the next year or so, but I still couldn’t stay away from the brand while I was in New York.

With reasonable prices and on-trend designs (at least some select pieces within their collection is fashion-forward), it’s difficult to avert your eyes. The flashy lights and giant alluring staircase doesn’t help either. Everything about the store begs for shoppers to enter. Basically a shoppers’ paradise without explicitly saying so. Now tell me how I was supposed to resist and say no?

I had actually originally wanted to only take a quick peak at the store’s selection since I had yet to drop into that location. What was originally planned to be a 15 minute browse easily turned into a 2 hour shop and try-on spree.

What began as an armload of hangers wound up being a careful selection of breezy, army-green culottes. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I’ve never lived in a more comfortable pair of pants than culottes. They seriously rival sweats except that they’re equally acceptable at work as they are comfortable. It’s easily an understatement when I say that I can’t wait for UNIQLO to finally open its first Canadian location in Toronto.
