Last week I had the pleasure of previewing Coty Canada’s first ever fῡme scent lounge at Hudson’s Bay in Yorkdale Mall. Scent is such a personalized aspect that it can sometimes be daunting to shop for. The feeling of finding the perfect scent is so invigorating, it’s like awakening your senses to a new experience. Every time I stumble onto a new fragrance that appeals to me, I get this little excitement and delight inside, as if I just learned of a new secret. The funny thing about scents is that you typically have an idea of what sort of smells you like, but you won’t know if you actually like something until you experience it for yourself.
The fūme scent lounge was designed specifically to help shoppers to reimagine the fragrance shopping experience by allowing the consumers’ scentual (haha see what I did there) instincts take over in guiding them to their new favourite fragrances (or even affirming old ones). With the help of an innovative survey and RFID-enabled technology, this modern method of shopping for a fragrance really transformed the process into a full 360 experience for me. Not only can you take in the beautiful bottles and displays, but your refractory senses are fully utilized to help guide you towards discovering new scents that you may have never knew that you liked.
I’m already a huge fan of so many of the different brands under the Coty Canada portfolio (Chloe, Marc Jacobs, and Gucci to name a few), that I wanted to test out the lounge and see if it would be able to identify a new favourite. There are many different methods to approaching the experience, but here are my two top choices: the first being that you allow your nose to act as a guide by playing around with the inhalers and discovering which scents speak to you. You can then learn more about each fragrance by activating and identifying them via the RFID tags. Once you find a scent that you like, the RFID-enabled inhalers can be placed into their specific holders on the counter to pull up a complete scent profile of the fragrance that you selected. The fact that I could learn which various notes were incorporated into each fragrance and the story behind it – I love learning more about everything in general (nerd me is coming out) – was truly fascinating.
Or you can take an intelligent survey and allow the AI powered technology to compile your preferences and recommend you a potential match. The touch-screen table provides a lovely reco based off of your personal preferences when it comes to scents (masculine vs. feminine, sweet vs. floral, subtle vs. strong, etc.). Coincidentally enough, through both methods of scent identification, I matched for Tiffany’s newest fragrance launch! I had yet to know that I liked it prior to visiting the lounge, but the fun and dynamic experience really modernized the process of shopping for a fragrance and helped me to identify a new perfume that was most definitely going to join my growing collection.
The experiential process of selecting a fragrance is definitely an eye-opening process and a testament to the power of your nose as it truly affirmed my thoughts when I let myself be guided by my senses. If you’re in search of a gift for that special someone this upcoming holiday season, and fragrances are within your plan, I would 100% recommend a visit to the new fῡme scent lounge!
