A Symphony of Silk

In the dead of summer, no fabric feels better on the skin than something silky. Purchasing things made out of 100% silk isn’t exactly in my budget so it helps when you can find similar fabrics that give off the same cool touch when you’re sweating buckets in the heat.

I’ve had this silky slip for a quite a couple of years now, and it’s always been used as a slip to me. I’ve never really utilized it as a dress (which it wasn’t quite meant to be, but hey, we’re breaking some boundaries here) until now and I can’t believe that I’ve waited for so long before giving this alternative a try.

With something this dainty, I wanted to keep everything else as delicate as possible. Obviously I needed something to line it underneath (even though it in itself is a slip and all – but we don’t need any actual nip-slips here), and the first thing that came to my mind was a lacey bralette.

With a slip this delicate, I didn’t want any thick straps that would deter from the simplicity of the silhouette. The acceptable approach to bras is for the straps to be hidden and for your breasts to appear as if they’re lifted up naturally without the help of an underwire or straps, but when it comes to bralettes, the opposite is the norm.

What’s the point of the lace if you’re not planning on showing any of it off? After all, I’m sure that the designers of the lace pattern are pretty proud of their handiwork – I know I’m proud for them.

I chose a bralette with a matching strap width so that the straps itself would kind of remain hidden (who are we kidding here, the black was quite a contrast against the beige silk) but would allow for the lace to stand out against the front and back neckline. With just the right amount of lace, I achieved the perfect lingerie-inspired look without feeling like I was actually in pajamas.

But no one can really go out dressed in pajamas without feeling at least relatively exposed – I can hear the coverups calling my name! I recently received this 100% modal scarf from Precious and Primitive and just knew that it would pair well with this slip. I wanted to keep the entire palette neutral (you all know that I’m such a B&W girl), and the pastel blue paired with a chocolate brown steer head print was just the right touch against the beige.

I don’t typically wear scarves in the summer just because my obsession with blanket scarves has me associating them with the bitter cold winter months, but the modal fabric makes it feel like barely a whisper against my skin. Invisible coverups are definitely a yes in my books when I’m not planning on sweating like a pig.

To go along with the delicate lace and detailed print of the scarf, I decided to accessorize with the newest addition to my small but slowly growing necklace family. I stepped outside of the box here a little by experimenting with some gold. I’m not typically a yellows type of girl, but the warm tones of this silk slip were just begging for some color temperature to offset the blues of the scarf.

I’m not extremely superstitious, but I am all about the “good vibes only” mantra, so having this little Evil Eye necklace is kind of an affirmation to my beliefs.

There were already enough thin straps going on, so I didn’t want to go the strappy sandal route either. The only obvious option to stay within the color palette were this pair of beige sandal booties that I picked up from an outlet a couple of weeks back. I’d been on the hunt for these exact sandals in my size and was absolutely overjoyed when I stumbled across them in the clearance section. Sometimes the best things really do come to those that are patient!
