Flow of Textures

After spending the last five days at the tents in David Pecaut Square for World Mastercard Fashion Week, it was nice to dress down a little bit while relaxing over the weekend. I had a couple of errands to run over the weekend, so dressing down didn’t actually facilitate a full on sweat look (although I wished that I could have lounged around all day in my Roots!).

I woke up Sunday morning to a little bit of a trickery played by Mother Nature. A quick peek out of my window revealed blue skies and sunshine, but stepping out the door revealed a different situation. Not only was the wind strong enough to blow me over, but the air was nippy enough for goosebumps to prickle up over my arms. But how do I bundle up to prevent becoming chilly by the wind but not overheating in the sun? Leather and silk – duh.

Leather is by far one of my favorite textures to play with. But with such a rugged look comes the neccesity of balancing things out with other textures. A long time go-to of mine has always been silk. It’s easy for the flow of silk to counter balance against the stiffness of leather when it drapes so easily over the body. The pairing of the two have yet to fail me and I can’t help but want more of each – #shoppaholic.

My H&M pleather pants are easily the most worn thing that I own, yet it has lived well beyond what I put it through. Not only does it fit perfectly, but it prevents any air from passing through and giving me the itches. Matching the bottom with the top was my unconventional ZARA black pleather jacket whose cut isn’t one that you often see. I love how different it is from all other moto jackets that are on the market, which sets me a part from others.

Running around with that much leather can make me sweat, so I layered a Valdis silk tank underneath which was significantly more breathable than pleather. Although silk can sometimes borderline a little bit on the grandma side, Valdis’ minimalistic designs completely negate that notion. The sheerness of the top along with its draping shoulders definitely lends a feminine touch to an aggressive black and rugged look created by all of the pleather. It’s nice to have something that flows so easily underneath stiffer pieces to give the entire outfit some movement – unless being a box is the look that you’re going for.

I recently discovered the NYC label Valdis and completely fell for its simple aesthetic and linear silhouettes that are completely in line with my personal style. And when a brand designs pieces in a neutral palette similar to mine, you know that I’m lusting over the entire collection – both past and present. Their upcoming F/W 2015 collection features tons of B&W (Hello! Instant favorite!) as well as some burgundy, proving that last winter’s color of choice isn’t leaving just yet.

You can bet that I already have my eye on some of their simple silhouettes for the next winter to come (psst, spot the amazing blue duster coat)! Because besides loving feminine and A-line silhouettes, oversized jackets and blouses are also a fan favorite. After all, comfort is key right? And how can you get any comfier than with oversized jackets that allows for tons of movement and layering of different tops underneath!
