How to Style: Mad About Plaid

Mad About Plaid

Jacket – ZARA

This year, patterns appear to be reigning supreme over solids. Besides leopard print, plaid seems to be creeping back into our closets and making a huge comeback for the fall and winter. Queue all of the Clueless costumes that you’ll see on the streets this year for Halloween! If you could take a shot for all of the Cher impersonators that you would see this Halloween, LCBO would probably run out of product. All jokes aside, I’m a big proponent for plaid since it sits on the more conservative side of the spectrum, and hey, if the royals wear it, then I’d consider it classy!

Though I’ve yet to personally find one that I love, my personal favourite is a full plaid suit with matching blazer and trousers because you can honestly multipurpose each piece separately for maximized options. And if worn together? Bam! Instant power-suit that is sure to awe and amaze all onlookers. In all seriousness though, I’ve fully succumbed to the plaid craze, probably more so than the leopard trend, and I want to share this obsession with you. If you’re thinking of taking a deep-dive into the plaid madness with me, here are some fun ways to incorporate it into your closet.

The Power Suit

I don’t have one yet, but it’s something that I’d really like to own by the end of the year. Power suits can either go extremely well tailored, or have a loose-boyish silhouette. I love when the trousers are nice and tailored and the jacket is left a little box, making it easier to layer and to potentially pass as a coat if you want to separate the two afterwards. There’s a beautiful Veronica Beard (jacket, trousers) set that I’ve been eyeing, which may or may not find its way into my closet pretty soon…

The Blazer

This is the tried, true, and easiest way to integrate plaid into your closet. Passing off a blazer as a jacket in the early spring and fall is easy enough to do, so why not invest in a piece that’s easily re-purposeful? And if you already own a power suit, then you’ll instantly have the perfect blazer to wear alone. Unless you want a second one that is, and if so, I wouldn’t blame you. Because I’d absolutely buy multiple blazers as well!

The Trouser

A well fitted trouser is literally all you need in life to feel chic. If taken from the power suit, or even purchased separately, make sure that your trousers either fit you extremely well, or get them tailored. A good pair of trousers that fit well can either be worn out and about casually, or in the office. My preference is for a pair of trousers with a high waist so that it helps to cinch in your hips a little bit more. When it comes to wearing loud patterns on the bottom half of your figure, it can tend to make your legs and hips appear heavier than they actually are, so go for silhouettes that help to counteract that. A good paper-bag waist is not to be passed up on!

The Skirt

Although plaid can be a classy pattern to wear, the bold pattern also comes with a side of masculinity. To bring a bit of femininity back into an outfits, consider a plaid skirt. You can either go all out in Cher style like me and get a yellow plaid skirt, or find something a little bit more low key with a muted print like my red Burberry one. Now to find the matching blazer to the yellow skirt so that I can actually dress up as Cher for Halloween…

The Jacket

If you like making a statement, then this one is for you. I’m all for a loud jacket that gets you all of the attention, and a plaid jacket is definitely the way to do it. I just recently purchased one from ZARA which I’ve yet had the chance to shoot for the blog, but there are so many other beautiful ones that I’ve been eyeing which I can’t wait to share with you!

So what do you think? Are you game for the plaid trend, or are you more or a leopard girl? I’m totally in it for plaid and definitely a little mad for plaid! I’m having such a fun time getting back into fashion related content and sharing my take on the current trends, so let me know if this is something that you enjoy reading as well.
