On That Daily Grind (Of Coffee)

When I wake up in the morning, the first thing that I do is go downstairs into my kitchen and plug in my kettle. P works from home, so I make both coffee for myself and him. Our french press can hold up to 2-4 small cups of coffee, so quite a bit of water is used in order to fill it up. To boil that much water takes quite a bit of time, so by doing it first, I can get the rest of my morning routine done while the water boils.

I grew up drinking instant coffee, well, because it’s instant. You don’t have to worry about going out and buying beans, grinding them and then pressing them. It’s easy and efficient – just the way I like it. P introduced me to the world of coffee beans when we first got together and I haven’t looked back since.

Ever since I graduated from University and the need for coffee wasn’t as instant (I no longer needed that quick caffeine boost at 3 AM while cramming for a final), my quest for coffee has switched from quantity to quality.

If you’re not completely caught up with my coffee journey, let me quickly sum it up for you. I began my coffee career with a distaste for the flavor, but which quickly bloomed into an addiction once I discovered its energizing properties. Fast forward a couple of years, I no longer drank coffee for the reason of staying awake, but for the reason that I would get headaches without it. In order to reverse my addiction, I began to drink less coffe. I got to the point where I would only really need the initial caffeine hit in the morning, and now I’ve progressed to being able to subsist on tea instead of coffee.

To me, coffee has now became more of an indulgence and a treat as opposed to an everyday necessity. And when it comes to indulging, you want the best of the best. There’s no point wasting the opportunity on mediocre. Which also means that since I don’t drink as much coffee as I did before, each and every cup has to be worth it to me. Instant coffee is officially out and beans are in!

So when I can get premium roasted coffee delivered straight to my doorstep, I know that all of the pieces in my life have come together in a little box of awesomeness. As a self-professed caffeine addict, I’m always looking out for new cafes to try – which was how I stumbled across Nomad Coffee Club. Being a monthly subscription service, Nomad Coffee Club ships a new box from a different Canadian roaster to you each month. Not only is it efficient, but you get to see what different local roasters have to offer.

You guys know by now that I’m a huge supporter of Canadian businesses, so being able to sample coffee from across the country is a fantastic opportunity that I can’t turn down. Since I no longer drink as much coffee as I used to, the Single Pack is more than enough for me. For only $25/month, I can brew up to 35 cups of coffee (which most likely translates into much, much longer than just a month for me).

P also drinks more coffee than I do, so he can finish up whatever roast is leftover while we wait for the next month to come in. For a girl who’s so stuck in her own habits, getting a different coffee every month is actually quite rewarding. You never really know what to expect and it’s always a wonderful surprise.

For the month of June, I received a roast from de Mello Pelhata Coffee Roasters (it’s actually one of my favorite cafes from Toronto!) that was flavored with citrusy hints of lime and lemon. P and I are typically fans of sweeter and heavier roasts that incorporate chocolate and caramel flavors, so it was nice to try something a little bit different.
