A Compromise

A Compromise

For almost as long as I can remember, I’ve bought a new jacket each time winter comes around. Not purposely to replace my old parkas, but more to add to my collection of jackets that I already own so that I have a variety to choose from. I currently own 2 parkas, 2 peacoats and a couple of other variants. Obviously they’re all different in style and color so as to avoid replicates, but also to allow myself more options when putting together outfits.

But because winter jackets can be relatively pricey ($100+), I gave myself a rule to only purchase one a year at most. They last long enough anyways so there’s no point to owning 30 different ones.

A Compromise

This year, I didn’t have my sights set on any particular one, so instead I decided to compromise and settle on a blanket scarf instead. Since discovering blanket scarves last year, I literally lived in the one that I had for the entire duration of winter. And it’s not much of a stretch to say that I “lived” in my blanket scarf since I literally carried it everywhere with me during my last year in school. I’d not only use it to keep myself warm during the early morning and late nights commute back and forth from campus to home, but also use it in between classes as a blanket to cozy up to in the library. But just because scarves are smaller than jackets doesn’t mean that they themselves don’t come with a hefty price tag either.

For a whopping $75+ at Aritzia, not only are they quality scarves, but they’re also expensive. I just can’t justify more than one each year as I follow the dollar-per-wear rule whenever buying clothes, and since I most likely won’t be wearing the scarf for at least 75 days before it gets retired back into my closet once spring rolls around, one is more than enough.

Last year I gifted myself the Balsamine blanket scarf from Aritzia, and the beautiful burgundy red pattern worked perfectly into my at the time red-revolving outfits. Looking through my accessories drawer this year, I realized that everything I own is in varying shades of grey, black and that singular red scarf. I was in need of something a little lighter and more neutral so that I could pair up my darker outfits for a bright contrast.

I settled on a cult favorite, the Wind blanket scarf, also from Aritzia, but instead of picking it up in-store, I manage to snag it at a steal from another girl who decided that she no longer needed it in her closet. I can’t be happier to have saved a couple of dollars and to get the scarf in literally brand new condition, but you know what they say: “one man’s trash is another’s treasure“. I definitely can’t argue with that proverb there.
